Start with work you can show

UGC portfolio with no experience

Make a beginner UGC portfolio with honest spec work. Use a filming brief, sample captions and a publish-or-reshoot worksheet before pitching brands.

Short answer: You can build a UGC portfolio before your first paid project by filming self-directed samples, labelling them as spec work and showing the role you performed. You still need real work to watch; a list of brands you hope to work with is not a portfolio.

What can you show without paid client work?

Show self-directed product demonstrations, explanations or other samples that demonstrate a service you can actually deliver. A spec project is a self-initiated example, not evidence that the featured brand hired or endorsed you.

Use products you already own and know how to use. Describe only what you can honestly show. You do not need to pretend a sample was a campaign, add client logos or invent a testimonial to make the page complete. Canva’s portfolio guidance also includes non-client work as an option.

How do you plan a useful first spec sample?

Give each sample one communication job and one visible capability. The worksheet below is a PitchHoney planning exercise, not a client brief or a tested formula for winning work.

  1. Choose a real object

Object: [something you own]. Intended viewer: [who would need the explanation]. Question: [one thing the viewer wants to understand]. Avoid choosing a product purely for its brand name.

  2. Write what the video must show

Opening: [the question or situation]. Demonstration: [the action the camera can verify]. Ending: [a truthful takeaway]. For an everyday bag, for example, show how a specific item fits; do not invent waterproofing or durability claims.

  3. Record your contribution

Concept: [ ]. Filming: [ ]. Editing: [ ]. Voiceover or on-camera role: [ ]. Name collaborators where appropriate. This record becomes your sample caption.

  4. Choose a second capability

Make the next sample answer a different question or demonstrate a different format. An overhead packing demonstration and an on-camera explanation can show different skills using the same object. Repeating the same edit in another colour adds little evidence.

How should you label unpaid portfolio work?

Put the spec label beside the sample, where a buyer sees it before making assumptions. Explain the brief and your contribution without borrowing the credibility of a customer relationship.

Caption template: “Self-directed spec sample; not commissioned by the featured brand. Brief: [communication task]. My role: [actual work]. Format: [actual format].”

If a sample was commissioned, say that only when it is true and you can share it. An organic view count is not evidence of sales or ad performance. Leave results out when you do not have attributable, permissioned evidence.

How do you decide whether to publish or reshoot?

Publish when the sample demonstrates the stated skill and the complete video works for a signed-out visitor. Reshoot or re-edit when the main action, sound or intended message is unclear.

Copy one review record per sample: Filename [ ] · Intended question [ ] · Visible answer and timestamp [ ] · My role [ ] · Spec label present [ ] · Full playback tested [ ] · Keep / re-edit / reshoot [ ] · Reason [ ]. Ask another person to describe what they saw before telling them your intended answer. Record their actual response; this is a diagnostic exercise, not a numerical portfolio score.

Next, use the complete portfolio contents checklist, then the step-by-step build guide. Once the work is ready, adapt the UGC pitch email worksheet to a relevant brand.

Want the design handled?

Film and select your samples first. When you have work to show, PitchHoney can curate it and design your portfolio. See the package inclusions and current ordering process before deciding.
